.....something I love almost as much as I love sailing is words - and irony - no not ironing, though actually I quite like that too - the play on words - i.e. "sail like a girl" conjures in my mind "throw like a girl" which is definitely a detrimental description of a really poor thrower. "Sail like a girl" I like because its catchy, amuses people who understand the meaning and is ironic because its not detrimental at all - its just sailing like a girl/woman - e.g. the way we sail, not poorly at all but for many women 'differently'.



So for the next few years I'm intending to do as much sailing as possible - to 'infect' as many other women as I can with the sailing bug, and then when I'm too old maybe I'll just play with words.



What I want to do with this blog is invite all of the other women sailors I know (and don't know yet) to write whatever they want on these pages, sharing anything sailing related to other visitors. Whatever I learn from all of you subscribers can only improve what I pass on to others.

Hello, I've been googling looking for any chats or blogs where I could just find........

......... a woman like myself who might understand my sailing challenges and your blog "spoke to me" :).  I'm a 49 year old mother of a 14 year old boy.  I was raised with 3 brothers and was the one who "never got to sail the boat alone".  Despite this, I watched everything.  At 25 I took a 21 ft out of marina del rey in California and sailed all over the harbour and felt so empowered.  I new one day I would be a sailor.  I've taken dinghy sailing lessons / started Power squadron but had no time to continue with work and my son's schedule.  A few summers ago I chartered a 28 ft catalina off of Sydney BC with my son and his friend.  When my son graduates I want to liveaboard and travel.  In the meantime, I don't know any women who have the interest I do.  I don't want to race I just want to cruise comfortably.  My current goal is to see what I could find for my son and I to do together.
 
If you have any insights into the sailing world for me Nancy I'd would so welcome them :).

    Hello Teri,
    I don't know Kamloops well at all, just that there is a river running through it. Are there lakes close where you can sail? I know there is alot of sailing on Lake Okanagan in Kelowna. Joining a yacht club would be a good start - doesn't have to be a big expensive one - dinghy sailing is alot of fun and some clubs have a fleet of boats that members can use.
    Are you in a position to buy your own boat? With this depressed market its a very good time to buy a boat. Joining sailing groups and associations is probably the best suggestion I can come up with. You say that you don't want to race, but your son might want to. I've raced on a few boats where we had other crew members who took on the less challenging jobs. When my son was that age he found sailing with me on my boat to be quite slow whereas he really loved dinghy sailing.
    I'll post your e-mail on the womensailors blog as someone else who reads it may have some other info. for you.
